We sent a team of children to Culters’ Hall on Wednesday afternoon to take part in a SSELP inter school maths competition. The SSELP Inter-School Y5 maths challenge was in partnership with Christ’s Hospital School, which is a prestigious (and one of the oldest in England) boarding school south of London.
Out of the 12 teams who took part, one of our teams won the whole event! We are very proud of all the children who took part. Well done! 👍🏼
We used great team-work skills to compare the product of different multiplication problems! Some of us used counters to help us – a great strategy to show represent groups of.
This week we have revisited 2D and 3D shape. We had to name them and identify their properties. Working with a partner, we then had to read the labels and sort the shapes into the correct hoop. Some of the shapes didn’t have a hoop, so we had to make sure we didn’t get tricked!
Playing these games will support your understanding of shape and their properties:

Watch Jason’s story here. “I’ve got three kids, and I felt like a let-down because I was struggling to help them with what they were learning… The further I got into the National Numeracy Challenge, the easier I found it, because you’re able to log in either at work or at home. My confidence has grown to a point where I can work things out in my head now. I don’t shy away from situations.”
We had to solve addition calculations using written digits or dienes with pictorial representations. We worked with a partner to ensure we found the same, correct sum before swapping roles.
Since returning after the Easter break we have begun to learn a new method when adding. Did you know that each number in an addition calculation has a name? Do you know what they are?
We have used different resources to create 3d shape.
We had to try and identify 3d shapes by listening to the clues about its properties. We used lots of language that we have used before: faces, edges, vertices, circular, rectangular, square etc. What 3d shapes can you identify?
